Kumon Has Become Part of Her Life – Student Chen
Chen has been studied Kumon for six years. She can clearly recall the reason why she enrolled in Kumon is, that she liked Kumon’s magnetic number board very much. She probably could not imagine that Kumon has become part of her life since then.
The Beginning of the Kumon Learning Journey
During a center experience campaign, Chen played the Kumon magnetic number board and did not hesitate to enroll in Kumon. After studyingKumon Math, she gradually realized that “The questions in Kumon Math are challenging; I had a sense of accomplishment every time I got them done. How to say it… I just really liked it from that time.” After a while, she also enrolled in Kumon English (EFL).
Advance Beyond School Grade Since Primary 2
Chen told us that she studied regular amount of Kumon worksheets at regular time every day, and she achieved advance beyond school grade since Primary 2, which was very fast. As many Kumon students said the same thing, “After you learned it at Kumon, when you learned it once again at school, it would be much easier.” Chen’s Father has never doubted about the concept of “advance beyond school grade” as well. He did not worry that children who have achieved advance beyond school grade would not pay attention at school, “I have absolute trust in my child. I occasionally look at her textbook, and find that she would take notes. That’s why I know she would not be distracted at school.””
Progress with Encouragement
However, during these years of learning, Chen’s study in Kumon was not entirely smooth. She failed when she took the Kumon English (EFL) completer test for the first time. She was devastated and lost her confidence in studying Kumon. After Chen’s Father talked to the Kumon Instructor, Chen withdrew from Kumon for a short period of time.
“Actually, my daughter did not tell me why she felt upset at the beginning. Thanks to Kumon instructors who observed her learning situation and informed me. My daughter and I are like friends; we always sit down and chatted. I helped her to analyse and suggested what would be the best way to handle the problem. Sometimes she seemed not able to carry on and I would remind her how much she wanted to study Kumon before. It has been like this for so many years.” It is believed that Chen’s Father helped her to regain the intention and enthusiasm of learning Kumon, so she could keep moving forward in the learning journey.
When Studying Kumon Has Become Part of Her Life
Chen once heard from her school teacher that continuous thinking and learning could give exercise to our brains and enhance our thinking ability. She experienced this concept at Kumon. Because she had achieved advance beyond school grade since she was Primary 2, she got used to staying calm and find the solution from the examples in the worksheets “For instance, the school is teaching us to use the linear equation to solve mathematic problems, but actually I have already learned the simultaneous equations. I noticed that there could be so many ways to solve a question. I indeed enjoy the process of using different ways to solve the same question; I feel my thinking ability is enhanced.”
Kumon requires children to persist in studying regular amount of worksheets at regular time every day. With her learning interest and her father’s encouragement, Chen was able to continue her study in Kumon. By the time Chen was interviewed, she has already become a double-subject Kumon completer (Kumon Math and Kumon English (EFL)). “After so many years, learning Kumon has become my habit. Therefore, after completing Math and English (EFL), I will continue to learn Kumon Chinese, because I will feel uneasy without Kumon.” When I worked on Chen’s interview materials, I was pleased to find that Chen had completed Kumon Chinese in February of this year (2016), becoming a triple-subject Kumon completer. The power of “habit” is fantastic!
Besides, Chen has become a little assistant at the Kumon education center, “I have completed all the learning materials and mastered the knowledge. Sometimes I helped my instructors to correct worksheets. This could be another way to learn Kumon.” As Chen said, learning Kumon has become part of her life; it is believed that Kumon’s learning outcome will have a continuous impact on her life.
