Kumon China Annual Environmental Report
Kumon China Annual Environmental Report 2019-2020
In recent years, the awareness of environmental problems aroused by the international society has been continuously rising. That is because environmental pollution not only affects the biophysical environment, but also possibly endangers the lives of human beings and animals, and initiates numerous natural disasters. Since its establishment, Kumon China (KCN) has been bearing an important responsibility of conserving the Earth’s environment. Through internal promotions and appeals from the KCN Green Team, we have prompted all associates to take part in the eco-friendly activities collaboratively in order to create an environment that can be sustainably developed for the offspring. The following summarizes some significant green actions that we have done in the annual year of 2019 – 2020 and compares the environmental data between 2018 and 2019 for general information.
1) Saved Energy & Protected Ecosystems
As we all know, fossil fuel is the major source of electricity. During the process of power generation, a large amount of air pollutants will be produced, which severely affect the air quality and exacerbate the greenhouse effect. Hence, we have exerted our utmost efforts to save electricity in two major ways. We consciously turned off electrical appliances like lights, air conditioners, and computers after use. Besides, we pasted green reminders on or near those electrical appliances for prompting associates to select energy-saving mode and disconnect the electricity supply when not in use. For example, the Shanghai warehouse of Kumon Beijing Trading (KBT) applied natural lighting in the daytime instead of using indoor lighting, so that unnecessary energy consumption could be cut down, making efforts to protect the biophysical environment.
During the daytime, bringing natural lighting into the warehouse through windows can reduce electricity usage.
2) Sowed Green Plants to Build a Low Carbon Workplace
Green plants not only can decorate our indoor environments but also can absorb carbon dioxide from the air and carry out photosynthesis in the daytime, helping to build a low carbon workplace. We have encouraged our associates to sow potted plants and place them on the desks to improve fatigue and anxiety at work. Moreover, we have purchased and placed some large green plants in the public areas of the offices. These green actions have enhanced the air quality of the working environments from an overall perspective and increased indoor humidity. By adopting different kinds of energy-saving measures and sowing green plants, we are pleased to see that the carbon dioxide emission decreased from 148 tons in 2018 by 102 tons to 46 tons in 2019.
Placed a large green plant outside the conference room to help improve the air quality.
3) Reduced the Paper Usage & Implemented Electronic Office
Producing paper needs to cut down lots of trees and waste plenty of oils. In order to better conserve the forests and cherish the natural resources, we have actively motivated our associates to make use of different means to save paper and implement electronic office, such as sending files through email and using double-sided printing. For instance, Kumon Hong Kong (KHK) employed an electronic health declaration form for the first time in its instructor conference to avoid producing a large number of printouts. Instructors only needed to scan a QR code for accessing the electronic form, and then they could complete and submit it on the internet. With the united efforts made by all associates to minimize the paper usage collaboratively, the paper usage decreased by 89,540 sheets from 2018 to 2019, resulting in a reduction of 11%.
Employed an electronic health declaration form to replace printed forms which could decrease the paper usage effectively.
4) Recycled Cardboard Boxes for Efficient Use
In the daily operation of the offices, we needed to use cardboard boxes efficiently for transporting items like learning materials, event goods, and promotional materials. During the process, many abandoned cardboard boxes were produced, and the problem of garbage accumulation was caused. Facing this problem, we have spared no effort to collect and reuse abandoned cardboard boxes for mailing or recycling to fully utilize them. Besides, we have collected and recycled useless paper and reused single-sided printouts. Affected by the actions of recycling paper and cardboard boxes, the amount of paper put out for recycling in 2019 had an increase of 5%, as compared to that of 2018.
Collected, reused, and recycled abandoned cardboard boxes to fully utilize them.
Living in the same Earth, breathing the same air, and sharing the same resources. Being a part of the society, KCN will persistently take various eco-friendly measures to help conserving the natural ecosystems and saving the natural resources, so that our next generation can grow up to be strong and healthy in a wonderful environment.
Kumon China Annual Environmental Report 2018-2019
Since its establishment, the Kumon Group has been insisting on its mission, which aims to cultivate children who will contribute to society. With this human-centric mission, we have been fostering talents around the world and hope to fulfill our social responsibilities and obligations, which include making a concerted effort for solving global environmental problems. Facing the vital challenge on global environmental protection, we have endeavored to incorporate the environmentally friendly vision into our business planning, while exerting ourselves to protect our precious planet and achieve sustainable development in natural resources.
In order to enhance the awareness of all associates at Kumon China (KCN) towards environmental issues, the KCN Green Team has been striving to collect environmental data, encourage associates to protect the environment in the workplace, request all branches to submit a report on environmental protection in each quarter, and publish green tips quarterly for motivating associates to live a green life. Below are the environmentally friendly measures applied and the environmental data collected by KCN in the annual year 2018 – 2019 for general reference.
1) Recycling and Reusing Paper
One of the sources which has easily caused waste is on the daily printing of company documents and the use of paper boxes for transporting materials. Hence, all branches of KCN have adopted plenty of ways to decrease paper usage. For example, Kumon Guangdong has used recycled papers to print out the Travel Reimbursement Form (applicable in Guangzhou city only), Kumon Beijing has recycled and reused single-sided printouts, Kumon Shanghai has reduced the times of distributing printed handouts during large-scale conferences. Regarding the abandoned paper boxes, Kumon Beijing and Kumon Shanghai have collected and reused them for material storage and transportation. With the dedicated efforts of KCN and its branches, KCN’s overall paper usage was reduced from 847,495 sheets in 2017 to 837,990 sheets in 2018, and 9,505 sheets were saved in total.
To minimize paper usage, recycled papers have been used to print out the Travel Reimbursement Form (applicable in Guangzhou city only).
2) Reducing Energy Consumption
Global warming has been a crisis that brooks no delay, and its main cause, greenhouse gas emissions, is aggravating the situation. KCN has been undertaking the social obligation to help alleviate global warming by striving the principle of “Reducing Energy Consumption”, so less greenhouse gas will be emitted, and the crisis of global warming can be improved. Most of the branches of KCN have taken green actions to reduce electricity use. For instance, Kumon Beijing has bought an energy-saving robot vacuum to cut down energy consumption; Kumon Beijing Trading and Kumon Guangdong have posted green reminders on electronic equipment or devices to remind all associates to turn off or adopt energy-saving mode when not in use; Kumon Hong Kong has turned on an electric fan in the conference room to improve air ventilation when necessary, resulting in the raise of the air conditioners’ temperatures and the reduction of electricity usage. Despite the slight increase in KCN’s overall electricity usage from 2017 to 2018, Kumon Hong Kong has lowered its electricity usage from 22,873 kWh between January and March in 2017 to 20,701 kWh during the same period in 2018, with a total reduction of 2,172 kWh.
An energy-saving robot vacuum was bought to cut down energy consumption.
3) Working at a Low-carbon Environment
When plastic products are being produced, a large amount of carbon dioxide is emitted which causes the problems of global warming and plastic pollution. To diminish the negative impacts brought by these problems, KCN and its branches have enthusiastically encouraged all associates not to purchase and use plastic products, but using reusable materials, such as adopting reusable cutlery, using porcelain cups instead of paper cups, reusing document folders and trays. Furthermore, it is common knowledge that green plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. To build a low-carbon workplace, numerous associates have placed green plants in offices which can help purify the indoor air, decorate their tables, and relieve eye fatigue.
Instead of providing paper cups, reusable porcelain cups are now available in the office which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
4) Promoting a Low-carbon Diet
The KCN Green Team has quarterly published green tips to all associates, encouraging them to take green actions in daily life. In March 2019, Green Team has launched green tips related to a low-carbon diet as the first quarter promotion, in which associates have been prompted to decrease carbon dioxide emissions through changing eating habits, like choosing appropriate food and cooking methods. Apart from sending green tips to inform all associates through email, offices have also printed out the leaflets and posted them on the noticeboards at the offices for reminding associates on those green tips.
Green tips leaflet has been posted on the noticeboard for promoting a low-carbon diet, aiming to raise staff’s environmental consciousness.
“One Small Step for Green Life Every Day, One Giant Leap for Environmental Protection Every Year.” If you are willing to take green actions every day, you can help solve global environmental problems. From today onwards, with the unity and the participation of all associates, KCN will continually protect the environment for improving human well-being.
Kumon China Annual Environmental Report 2017-2018
Throughout the years, Kumon has committed to “discovering the potential of each individual and developing his or her ability to the maximum” and “contributing to the global community.” Educating children and developing their potential are our goals and we believe that children are our future. As we protect the environment and save the earth, we are actually protecting children’s future.
As we, Kumon China, strive to reduce waste and maximize the use of resources and are dedicated to carrying out the green concept throughout the office operation and design. At the same time, all associates among Kumon China take the initiative to protect the environment in their work and daily lives. Let us share our associated initiatives that Kumon China has implemented in environmental protection.
Environmentally Friendly ---Save Energy
We are committed to reducing resource waste and energy consumption by conserving electricity. Kumon China associates start with doing small things, such as turning off the light while the room is not in use, setting the computer to “sleep mode” or turning it off while not at work, or turning off the screen while not using. These daily habits can make a great impact on conserving electricity day after day. In summer, the curtains are well used for separating the sunlight and reducing the office temperature, which takes less energy consumption in air-conditioning. Some offices increase the air conditioner temperature from 27 to 28 degree Celsius. Some warehouses also take an abundance of natural light by using floor-to-ceiling windows, which fewer lights are used during sunny days.
(Some warehouses decorate with floor-to-ceiling windows to increase natural light at the office)
Greening Around --- Comfort Surrounds
Greening plays an important role at the office; it not only creates an environmentally friendly space but also brings fresh air into offices and education centers. Last year, each office has increased the number of green plants, in order to provide an environmental and comfortable office environment to everyone. With the encouragement from the offices, associates also began to decorate their desks with their own plants. In addition, offices also actively provide more green plants for the education centers as well, so children and Kumon instructors can work and learn in a comfortable green surrounding.
(More green plants are placed at the office)
Creative Method --- Reallocation and Reuse
Kumon China associates continue using double-sided printing, and try to use recycled paper. Besides that, this year we are taking forward new initiatives for recycling and reuse. For example, offices work with local recycling companies to recycle papers, magazines, and process confidential documents. The batteries recycle box, plastic folder- reused box and stationery recycled box are placed at the offices. These initiatives promote the concept of recycling and recuse among associates.
(Collecting and reallocating all reusable folders and stationery)
Incorporate Environmentally Friendly Concept into a New Office
This year, Kumon China Regional Headquarters office and Kumon Hong Kong office were relocated. In the process of the renovation of the new office, we prioritized the establishment of an environmentally friendly office system that allows associates to work at a green office; at the same time, it helps in developing a sustainable system for the future. New office established a new set of the lighting system that is divided into multiple areas, which allows associates to turn on/off lights for the specific area depending on needs, and save the energy effectively. Furthermore, green slogan stickers are placed throughout the office, to encourage and remind associates to stay green.
(The lighting system is set to divide into the different areas, which can effectively avoid unnecessary electricity consumption)
We, Kumon China, believe that every green action is very important to our environment. In future operation, we will continue to raise the environmental awareness of our associates and implement more environmental protection measures, for contributing a better future for the world.
Kumon China Annual Environmental Report 2016-2017
As an educational company, making contributions to protecting the environment is one of the sound ways to build a better world for children; we believe that the environmental resources conservation promotion and actions could fully be implemented into our business operations. Kumon China (KCN) has developed a range of initiatives that encourage associates to use energy wisely and reduce wastes. We are so proud that all associates have participated and contributed to building a greener working environment. The following sustainable practice in our operations, including making good use of energy and paper, reuse and recycling of materials, reduction of CO2 emission, and green promotion will continue to fulfill our mission as nurturing children.
1) Making Good Use of Energy and Paper
We continually monitor our electricity consumption and encourage associates to turn off the lights and electronic appliances when not in use. Compared with last year, our electricity consumption has been reduced from 212,751kWh to 211,555kWh this year, which is 0.6% decrease. Associates are now highly aware of the importance of energy conservation.
Following the revision of Chinese and Math learning materials, more paper is used in printing new learning materials and lectures notes. Although there is an increase of paper usage (from 797,790 sheets last year to 805,789 sheets this year, which is 1% increase), each office has taken different measures to minimize paper usage, such as sharing electronic documents, adopting double-sided printing.
2) Reuse and Recycling of Materials
KCN region has seen a significant increase in recycling; the total paper of recycling in this year is increased by 51.2% compared to last year. Besides, Kumon Shanghai and Kumon (Beijing) Trading also saved the used paper boxes and reused them while Kumon Shanghai relocated the office.
In order to reduce wastage of resources, Kumon Hong Kong reallocates the resources to make sure all materials are well-used and reused, such as stationery, folders, and spare souvenir. Those resources are shared with different departments and associates in need.
3) Reduction of CO2 Emission
Through our continuous effort, KCN has strived to reduce CO2 emission. We managed to cut CO2 emission from 162t-CO2 to 161t-CO2, which is 99.3% of the emission of last year. Kumon Guangdong and Kumon Beijing placed more potted plants in the office, to purify the indoor air.
4) Green Promotion
Using leaflets and brochures are unavoidable in promotional campaigns. However, as we strive to reduce waste, QR codes are printed on a portable banner and posters, and even on instructors and associates’ business cards. We believe that using QR codes can print less (less information on paper) and let readers read more (more information on the web); it is not only more convenient for our customers but also a more eco-friendly way to advertise.
At Kumon China, we believe that a more sustainable environment is imperative to maintaining a sustainable business. We also believe that it is our duty to manage our impacts on the environment responsively by raising awareness and consciousness among associates, in order to create a better world for children.
Resources are reallocated to different departments and associates in need.
We work with recycling companies to manage all confidential and non-confidential documents disposal, so the disposal paper could be recycled.
By inserting QR code in promotional materials, less paper is printed and customers can obtain more information by scanning the QR code ( at the bottom right corner of the promotional materials shown in the picture).
Kumon China Annual Environmental Report 2015 - 2016
Since March 2011, Kumon China Green Team has carried out environmental protection work for five years. Adhering to the mission of “contributing to the human society”, Kumon China works closely with branch offices and achieves better results in saving resources and energy, promoting recycling and other environmental work. A series of daily promotional activities raise associates’ awareness of environment and enables Kumon China to contribute to environmental work.
First of all, let us review the environmental work that carried out by Kumon China this year.
1. Saving resources expenditure
For the sake of environmental protection, Kumon China has put a lot of effort in saving resources expenditure. When purchasing pens for employees, Kumon Guangdong is more inclined to buy pen refills rather than brand new pens. Kumon (Beijing) Trading’s warehouses employees bring their own cups, aimed at reducing the use of disposable cups.
2. Reducing energy consumption
After using electrical appliances, Kumon China associates are aware of turning them off timely. In addition, all kinds of electrical appliances are set to power-saving mode. Warehouse employees make the best use of daylight at work. During the daytime, they try not to use lights. Kumon Beijing, even in winter, does not use all the heating equipment, in order to save power. Kumon Hong Kong uses energy-saving lamps to reduce energy consumption.
3. Paper, stationery recycling
The use of many materials is unavoidable, such as printing necessary information, documents, used cartons during transportation. Kumon China recycles these materials. Kumon Shanghai reuses cartons; Kumon China (Regional Headquarters) and Kumon Guangdong collects event materials, such as tags, lanyards and retains for future activities. Kumon Guangdong keeps moon cake boxes and uses them as stationary containers. Kumon Hong Kong recycles paper printed on one side, and placed next to the printers, so that associates can easily pick up those recycling paper for printing. For paper products that cannot be reused, such as magazines and newspapers, offices collect them regularly and sell to recycle stations.
4. Raise employee’s awareness
The success of environmental work relies on staff with environmental awareness. In terms of raising awareness, offices put energy-saving reminder stickers at bulletin boards and related electronic equipment to remind employees to save energy. Kumon China (Regional Headquarters), Kumon Shanghai and Kumon Guangdong use WeChat to encourage employees to participate in the "Earth Hour" campaign.
By conducting the above work, Kumon China has seen good results in saving resources and energy consumption. Kumon China’s total electricity consumption was 93% of last year’s consumption. In the use of paper, the number of sheets used in Kumon China was 99% of last year’s volume, saving nearly 8,000 sheets of paper. The weight of recycled paper is about 1,897 kg, which is 101% of last year’s weight.
Environmental work is Kumon China’s long-term work. In the coming days, Kumon China Green team will spare no effort to learn from past experience and make use of excellent examples to facilitate environmental protection work, and harvest more significant effect!

Kumon China Annual Environmental Report 2013 - 2014
Making contribution to the society by nurturing children is the core mission of the Kumon Group. However, as an international enterprise which is willing to bear the responsibilities and values the benefit of society, we value the preservation of the global environment. Therefore, “we have incorporated the environmentally-friendly vision into our business planning and will work on a permanent basis to protect our precious planet.” Since the establishment of Kumon China Green Team in March 2011, the team has been working closely with all offices for environmental protection in China. With the principle of “treasuring limited resources”, we take different actions to “conserve energy and resources as well as promote recycling.” We aim at reducing the amount of waste and preventing environmental pollution by minimizing the environmental impact brought by our business activities. In order to achieve the green goal of Kumon China, everyone is striving hard to protect the environment in daily life.
Minimization of wastage and conservation of resources are effective ways to achieve environmental protection. In the past year, offices have taken different measures to minimize paper usage. For examples, offices adopt double-sided printing and encourage the use of electronic channels for document sharing. Associates are encouraged to use recyclable water bottles or tableware. They will also collect used envelopes and notebooks with blank pages for utilizing resources. In order to evaluate the paper consumption effectively, offices will conduct data analysis and provide feedback to teams on a regular basis. With the efforts of associates, the overall paper usage of Kumon China headquarter from the 3rd quarter to the 1st quarter of 2014 has decreased by 25.6%. The paper usage of Kumon Hong Kong in the 2nd quarter of 2013 has a 16.9% decrease while Kumon Shanghai has achieved a 10.7% decrease in the 4th quarter of 2013.
Other than reducing the use of paper, energy conservation is another essential aspect of environmental protection. Offices often emphasize on the importance of minimizing electricity usage and actions are taken to make effective use of energy at work. Associates remain alert to the use of electricity at office. For example, they would switch off the electrical appliances right after using them. They would even switch off the computer screen if they are not at seats for long. Regarding the use of air-conditioners, the room temperature will be strictly controlled to avoid unreasonable electricity consumption. Since associates have strong sense of energy conservation, the result about minimizing the use of electricity is satisfactory. From the 2nd quarter of 2013 to the 1st quarter of 2014, the electricity consumption of Kumon Guangdong, Kumon Hong Kong and Kumon Shanghai have decreased by 41.6%, 4.6% and 2.7% respectively. The consumption of Kumon Beijing Trading has also decreased by 22% in the 1st quarter of 2014.
Every office promotes recycling actively in order to make good use of limited resources of the earth. Associates collect papers, cartons and magazines involved in both business and personal use systematically. All these materials are collected for recycling. Kumon Hong Kong has even carried out the renovation work of sofas and chairs in office. This action helps to minimize wastage and reducing operation cost at the same time. Let Kumon Guangdong as an example for the recycling of paper. With the continuous efforts of associates, a total of 253 kilograms of paper has been accumulated for recycling and the recycling rate has been increased by 23.6% in comparing with last year. This reflects that associates have already incorporated recycling into their daily work life to minimize the environmental impact.
Following the policy of “strive to make each and every Kumon associate more aware of environmental issues through education and consciousness-raising activities”, all offices are making continuous effort to enhance associates and instructors’ awareness towards environmental protection by encouraging them to take green actions. This includes encouraging associates to bring plants to office, sticking labels as reminders of resource conservation, spreading green messages to instructors via monthly newsletters and promoting the green campaigns of specific regions. It is hoped that everyone can make more contribution towards the ultimate green goal.
Collect reusable items for recycling and reducing wastage
Enhance associates’ awareness via promotion and education
Improve the office environment with green plants
With continuous effort and promotion of offices, associates were highly alert to the use of electricity at office. Electric appliances were switched off immediately after use to minimize unnecessary consumption.
Since CO2 emissions is closely related to electricity usage, the 11.2% decrease of CO2 emissions was caused by the decrease of electricity usage in 2013.
Offices had adopted different measures to reduce paper usage and associates were strongly encouraged to use reusable items as well as collecting useful office materials for re-use purpose.
In 2013, offices tried to make good use of e-channels in distributing materials to associates and instructors. Therefore, the decrease of paper usage had resulted in a decline of recycling rate of paper.
Kumon China Annual Environmental Report 2012 - 2013
“The Kumon Group views the preservation of the global environment as an important challenge to be met as we carry out our business activities. Accordingly, the Kumon Group believes that one of our core values is to fulfill our responsibilities and obligations in regard to solving global environmental problems. We will incorporate this environmentally-friendly vision into our business planning and will work on a permanent basis to protect our precious planet and sustain its natural resources for current and future generations.” This is the environmental Philosophy of the Kumon Group – an international enterprise which is willing to shoulder the responsibilities and values the benefit of society. In order to fulfill the promise of “Contributing to the global society” by the Kumon Group, Kumon China Green Team was established in March 2011. It aims at encouraging all staff to take all possible actions “to conserve natural resources and to preserve the natural environment through the development of human resources”, from internal to external, from saving to preservation. By implementing various kinds of measures to conserve energy and resources, everyone in Kumon China is striving to move towards a green Kumon China in the past two years.
Effective conservation of resources is an important focus for environmental protection and minimization of wastage. In daily operations, bulk consumption of paper is regarded as a significant challenge against environmental protection. Each office has taken different measures to minimize paper usage. For example, considering sharing the electronic document, adopting double-sided printing and making it a default mode for photocopiers and printers, using recycled paper for printing. KBT has made use of a new system called “Document Library” to share information among cities effectively. With the joint efforts of different offices, the overall paper usage of Kumon China in the 4th quarter of 2012 and the 1st quarter of 2013 has decreased by 16.5%. Within this period, the paper usage of KHK has a 12.7% decrease while KSH has also achieved a 8.5% decrease from the 2nd to 4th quarter of 2012.
In order to achieve the ultimate goal of environmental protection, energy conservation is another essential task for offices. Associates are highly conscious of the importance of energy conversation and they have actualized this belief in their daily work. When associates are in office, they would switch off the computer screen if they are not at seats for long. Moreover, they would switch off the lights and other electrical appliances after meeting or after work. The last one to leave the office would check if all the power sources are switched off. For warehouse operation, associates have adopted measures to minimize the use of air-conditioners. For example, when the temperature is lower in the morning, they would focus on packing materials which requires higher energy level. When the temperature is higher during noon, they would mainly work on unpacking cartons as this task requires less energy. The above measures have brought improvement in energy conservation. Take the 2nd to the 4th quarter of 2012 as an example, the electricity consumption of KSH, KBJ and KHK has decreased by 8.2%, 4% and 1.6% respectively. The consumption of KBT has even recorded an encouraging decrease of 32.5%.
To minimize the environmental impact caused by business activities, Kumon China has actively encouraged all associates to carry out Environmental Policy - recycling. Paper box and magazine involved in business or personal use are being collected and recycled for future use; Warehouse materials like carton, packing strings and wrapping paper are categorized and recycled by KBT through systematic measures to minimize wastage and utilize resource. From April 2012 to March 2013, Kumon China has accumulated a total of 3,421 kilograms of paper for recycling. This number has increased by 27.8% in comparing to the same period of last year.
Following the policy of “strive to make each and every Kumon Associate more aware of environmental issues through education”, every office has carried out continuous education and promotion to emphasize the importance of environmental protection. For instance, they have shared the group’s environmental philosophy and action plan during all staff meeting. They have also shared the latest green news and tips via instructor newsletter. Reminders have been used in different parts of the offices to reinforce the environmentally friendly attitude. Furthermore, associates are encouraged to take part in the global activity “Earth Hour”.
